WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana was caught by surprise when Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced an official poll, where the boxing public was encouraged to vote for his next opponent. Mayweather is scheduled to return on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas,
The two choices presented as potential opponents were Maidana and Amir Khan. Maidana has a very large lead in the early stage of the campaign, but Khan evened things up by Friday and had a significant lead by Sunday's deadline.
"I was very surprised by the poll campaign. I do want to fight Mayweather. I know that it would be very difficult because he is a great boxer, the best, but he is not invincible. A fight with Mayweather would be the most anticipated of my entire career. If I were to beat Mayweather, I would consider retirement...I would have to think about it...sit down and think about that for a little while," Maidana said.
