Marcos Maidana has rejected reports that Floyd Mayweather Jr. paid him $1.5 million dollars to use a different pair of gloves for their May fight, which Mayweather won with a twelve round majority decision.
Following the official weigh-in, Mayweather rejected Maidana's selection of the Everlast MX gloves. According to Mayweather, the gloves had little to no padding around the knuckle area. After Maidana selected a different pair of Everlast MX gloves, and they were approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Mayweather still rejected them. After a long standoff, Maidana was forced to cave and selected a different style of Everlast gloves.
Maidana says Mayweather refused to fight until a different pair of gloves were selected. They have a scheduled rematch on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“There were rumors that I got paid to use Floyd’s gloves, but that’s not true. I had to accept his gloves because otherwise there was not going to be a fight. He basically called off the fight if I didn’t use his gloves, so I had to, I had no choice. Unlike him, I had come to fight, not to whine," Maidana said.
