Maidana, Garcia React To Ariza Working With Mayweather

By Luis Sandoval

The upcoming Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana mega fight had yet another storyline added to it as early Friday morning Mayweather posted a photo on social media of him and strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza appearing to be working together. The twist is that Ariza worked with Maidana before and was in his corner for the first Mayweather fight.

During their July press tour to promote the rematch, BoxingScene asked Mayweather about Ariza departing the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy to which Floyd responded by extending an invitation to Ariza to come to his gym. From everything going on, it appears Ariza took Floyd up on his offer.

BoxingScene caught up with Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia and asked him for his thoughts and reaction to Ariza now being Mayweather.

“The only thing I could think about is he has to give me the keys to my house because he still has all his things in my house; the house that I rented out for him. But it is what it is. It doesn’t affect us. I know that Mayweather is smart. Mayweather is not going to hire someone in 2 weeks to do magic. Mayweather isn’t stupid. I think he’s just using Alex as a dummy and Alex is just being a dummy. I feel bad for Alex he shouldn’t have allowed that to happen. He’s smarter than that,” Garcia would tell BoxingScene.

This wouldn’t be the first time Ariza finds himself on the opposite corner of a former fighter he has worked with. When Ariza parted ways with Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach he partnered with Garcia and Brandon Rios when Rios fought Pacquiao in Macau China last November. He later worked with Mikey Garcia and Marcos Maidana before the relationship was ended a couple months ago.

Maidana himself doesn’t appear bothered by the Alex Ariza situation either as he feels he’s doing what he has to do.

“That doesn’t interest me. I know he’s a strength and conditioning coach and he has to do his job. He has to work,” said Maidana.

Maidana and Garcia’s focus is set more on getting prepared for September 13th and are not worried about Ariza or anything else with less than two weeks to go.

Robert is upset. Chino understands that the man needs to work. Chino is a great guy.
