Luis Franco Split Defeat is Causing High Controversy

By Jhonny Gonzalez

There is a lot of controversy over Luis Franco's split decision loss to Mauricio Munoz from Saturday night in Argentina. The two boxers met in a final IBF featherweight eliminator in San Juan, Argentina. Franco (11-1, 7 KOs) took a big risk in facing Munoz  (26-3, 12 KOs) in his backyard.

Franco controlled the majority of the contest, with Munoz coming on in the late rounds. There wasn't much action and the pace was slow. All three judges were from the United States. Two scored it for Munoz - 115-114 and 115-113, and the third had Franco winning 118-110. A ringside reporter for BoxingScene's sister site, Notifight.com, scored it 117-114 for Franco.

Munoz now becomes the mandatory challenger to IBF champion Billy Dib of Australia.

Sources in Cuba are expecting Franco's camp to file an appeal for an immediate rematch.

[QUOTE=CubanGuyNYC;12609365]The kind of fight you just described is hard to score. It's also the kind that often goes to the hometown kid. Franco had the guts to go into unknown territory; he should've known you can't rely on the judging.…
