Argentina's Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34KOs) will return to the ring in early 2017, according to Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez.
Matthysse, 33-years-old, has been out of the ring since suffering his first knockout defeat last October, at the hands of Viktor Postol at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
The hard puncher told BoxingScene.com a few months ago that he planned to comeback at the welterweight limit of 147-pounds.
Matthysse was being scheduled to return in May, as part of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan pay-per-view in Las Vegas, but he withdrew - stating that his eye injury, that was suffered during the loss to Postol, had not properly healed.
There were also reports that Matthysse was not really interested in returning and seemed to be disinterested in the sport. A few weeks ago his countryman Marcos Maidana announced his retirement from the sport after being inactive since 2014.
Gomez spoke to the fighter's handlers and it appears that he's already getting physically ready, mentally prepared for his return and eager to make another title run in a new division.
"About Lucas Matthysse, we just had a good talk with his team. He is already being prepared and will be one hundred percent [to fight again] in the first few months of next year," Gomez told ESPN Deportes.
