On Saturday, Mexico's Orlando Salido took very lucrative opportunity to challenge Juan Manuel Lopez for the WBO featherweight title in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The crowd of 10,000 became silent when Salido closed the show by stopping Juanma in the eight round to end the Puerto Rican boxer's unbeaten streak.
Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum, Bayamon, Puerto Rico - Orlando Salido (35-11-2, 23KOs) pulled off another shocking upset in our sport, by stopping previously undefeated Juan Manuel Lopez (30-1, 27KOs) in eight rounds to capture the WBO featherweight title. At Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22KOs) captured the WBC welterweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Andre Berto (27-1, 21KOs). The fight was a war, a fight of the year contender, and both men went down twice. The scores were 115-110, 114-112 and 114-111.
By Cliff Rold - There will be those who criticize the stoppage of the fight but, considering the assault 30-year old Orlando Salido (35-11-2, 23 KO) was putting together, it merits little controversy. 27-year old Juan Manuel Lopez (30-1, 27 KO) has looked vulnerable before. In a sensational war fitting of the long Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry, he went from vulnerable to defeated for the first time. Referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. saved him from more of what was an increasingly nasty beating in round eight, awarding Salido the biggest victory of his career and second major title at Featherweight on Saturday night at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum went straight to the point and said Juan Manuel Lopez was affected by numerous distractions, both in his public life and personally, and they led to a lackluster showing at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, where he lost his perfect record and his WBO featherweight title to Orlando Salido by technical knockout at 1:39 of the eighth round.
