Lolenga Mock Gets New Foe, Manny Siaca Forced To Withdraw

By Per Ake Persson

Former WBA super middleweight champ Manny Siaca has been forced to pull out of the fight against Lolenga Mock, scheduled for October 7 in Copenhagen.

Siaca´s home in Puerto Rico hasn't had neither water nor electricity since Hurricane Irma hit the island and Siaca´s training facilities has also been ruined, reports Danish Fight Night in a press release.

Instead Ukrainian Roman Shkarupa, 26-7-2, have accepted to take on the 45-year old Mock, who is looking for win # 10 since coming back late 2015 and if all goes well vs Shkarupa an even bigger fight awaits on the next DFN show.

Promoters Mogens Palle and Brian Nielsen have moved the next Danish Fight Night show from November 11 to November 25 to avoid a clash with a possible Mikkel Kessler comeback that is tentatively booked a for a date in November.

The show November 25 marks the 60th anniversary since Mogens Palle began his long career in professional boxing.

IN OTHER NEWS: The 2017 GB Boxing Championships will be held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Thursday 7 December 2017 (doors open at 6.30pm, boxing begins at 7pm).

Tickets are on sale now, priced £10 at http://www.ticketsdirect.org.uk/gbchamps/EntryForm.aspx. Groups who purchase ten tickets will receive two tickets free.

The GB Boxing Championships, which will feature 10 men’s weights and five for women, will pit the winners of the 2017 Elite Three Nations competition (which is contested by the winners of the 2017 National Championships in England, Scotland and Wales) against a current boxer from the GB Boxing squad.

If the winning boxer is not currently part of the GB Boxing squad, they will secure an assessment with GB Boxing and an opportunity to join the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) as a funded athlete.

GB Boxing’s Performance Director, Rob McCracken, explained: “This event is a great opportunity for the GB Boxing coaches and me to see some of the talent we have coming through and assess the boxers in an intense, competitive situation.

“We are only in the first year of the Tokyo Olympic cycle so there is still a lot of opportunity for boxers to force their way into the GB Boxing squad and then into contention for the 2020 Olympics.  Several of the boxers that competed at the last Olympics did not join our squad until half way through the Rio cycle, so the door is always open to boxers that can show they have what it takes to succeed at the elite level.”

GB Boxing has been based in Sheffield since 2008 and one member of the squad, with a strong connection to the city, who is keen to compete at the Championship is the current European Middleweight Champion, Natasha Gale, who boxes for Sheffield’s Jubilee ABC.

Gale said: “Being part of the GB Boxing squad we usually compete overseas so I am really looking forward to the opportunity of being able to box at home.  The event being in Sheffield is great for me as it means that my family and friends will be able to come along to see me compete, which they very rarely get the chance to do.”

Other Yorkshire boxers hoping to be selected for the GB Boxing team that will compete in the event include light-welterweight, Conor Loftus, of Burmantofts ABC in Leeds and welterweight, Harris Akbar who boxes for Bradford Police Community College.  The full line-up will be announced in November.
