Liam Williams Should Go After The EBU Title, Says Gary Lockett

Trainer Gary Lockett believes the best is still to come from unbeaten British Super-Welterweight Champion Liam Williams.

Williams had a successful 2016, which included the first defence of his Lonsdale belt and two outings in Cardiff in front of noisy home fans at the Ice Arena in July and the Motorpoint Arena in November.

“Liam’s had three fights [in 2017] but I don’t think he’s shown his best. He had a good win over Gary Corcoran but he didn’t box well at all. I don’t think he boxed well in the last fight either,” Lockett told iFL TV.

“But I think that was due to circumstances. You’re supposed to box Ahmet Patterson - that fight was off for a second time - so Liam got left with a replacement opponent again.”

In the 24-year-old’s last bout, he stopped Gabor Gorbics in the eighth round. The Patterson fight was cancelled and instead he faced the tough Hungarian for the vacant WBO European strap.

“It was a guy he knew he was going to walk through, he didn’t box to best of his abilities but again it was another title,” added the Welsh coach.

The Clydach Vale talent is ranked third with the WBO and has been touted for a World Title eliminator or a fight with Liam Smith. For now though, his trainer remains cautious about Williams’ next move.

“People forget he’s had 16 fights. I just believe the guys slightly above him have had a lot more experience. I’d like to see him pick up the EBU Title against Cedric Vitu. He’s an experienced guy but it would be a very good learning fight for Liam, and a fight that he wins comfortably.

“We’ve got to speak to Frank in the next couple of weeks. Whether it’s defending his British Title or pursuing pastures new, then Liam’s going to be ready,” said Lockett.

The WBO Euro belt means Jack **** where as the EBU title is genuine, so that along with a Lonsdale belt out-right is the only way forward!
