WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13KOs) is hoping to check the chin of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs).
Smith is heading into the biggest fight of his career, when he defends his belt against Canelo on September 17th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Smith believes Canelo made a big mistake by fighting him, and should have selected another opponent for Mexican Independence Day weekend.
Smith is hoping that Canelo comes to fight, because the British boxer will be up for a trade of punches.
"If the show he wants to put on is a fight, then yes [we will fight]. I'll happily engage and put on a fight with him. He's not gonna have to go looking for me. If he wants to look he won't look far," Smith stated during a Q&A session on Reddit.
Smith has been studying Canelo's fights on a daily basis in training camp. He sees a lot of holes that he can exploit.
"Yes, we have [been studying his fight]. Every day [my trainer Joe Gallagher] comes into the gym with a notepad and we have Canelo on the laptop. We look at the rhythm and have sparring partners throw that [right hand] shot [of his] every now and again. I'm not gonna say I'm onto that shot because I don't know when he's gonna do it," Smith said.
"I know he's gonna come looking for that shot, it's up to me to look out and not get caught with that shot. If it does land, I think I have a good enough chin to take that shot and withstand it. I know any fighter can be taken out by any shot, but same goes for Canelo. If he takes a shot from me.... Cotto [hit] him [with] massive shot and [he] was on jelly legs. I can't wait to get in there with him and test his chin."
