Lara: I Hope Vanes Has The Balls To Try To Break My Ribs

By Ryan Burton

Junior middleweight contender Erislandy Lara recently paid a visit to BoxingScene's official audio show, The Boxing Lab.  Lara spoke on a variety of topics including his upcoming HBO televised eliminator bout against Vanes Martirosyan, taking place on November 10 at The Wynn in Las Vegas. The winner will become WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's mandatory challenger.

In a recent article on BoxingScene, WBC president Jose Sulaiman said that Alvarez will have to face his mandatory challenger in 2013. Lara, who's answers were translated from Spanish to English by his manager Luis DeCubas Jr, said that all of his focus is on Martirosyan but he admit that he hopes Sulaiman keeps his word.

"I am going to leave that in the hands of the WBC and Mr Sulaiman. I can't worry about that until after the fight. After the fight we will talk about that.

"Mr Sulaiman came on record and said that (Alvarez must face his mandatory).  He never came on record before so hopefully he is a man of his word and makes the fight happen. If it doesn't then no worries because the division is stacked.

There are a lot of great fighters we can fight and we would fight any of them.  We want to earn the title. Nothing has been given to us and we work hard for everything we get."

Martirosyan also appeared on a recent edition of The Boxing Lab and confidently said that when he gets in the ring with Lara that he will knock him out with a body shot that will also break the Cuban's ribs. When reminded of Martirosyan's comments, Lara laughed and said that Martirosyan doesn't know what he is getting himself into.

"It is going to be a very good fight. That I can guarantee you. Especially with the inspiration Vanes has to break my ribs. I hope he goes in the ring with the balls to try to break my ribs.  He will see what it's a like to be in the ring with an A+ fighter, " Lara concluded.

If PBF goes for May 4 vs Canelo, there is no way Lara gets Canelo before that. No. Chance. In. Hell.

There should be more buzz about this, it's gonna be a good clean boxing match with speed and skills on display.
