WBA "regular" junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (22-2-2, 13KOs) is not exactly sure as to why Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still holding the position as the WBA's super champion at 154-pounds.
Mayweather has not made a defense of his WBA title since September 2013, when he won a twelve round decision of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Adding to that, Mayweather announced his retirement two months ago, after winning a twelve round decision over Andre Berto. Mayweather's WBC welterweight and junior middleweight titles have already been vacated.
Lara returned to the ring last month and easily retained his title by stopping former champion Jan Zaveck in three rounds.
"I do not know what they are waiting for to name me the absolute champion, but that is something that is beyond my control. The politics of boxing are very complicated and I would rather simply focus on staying in the gym, defeating my opponents and forgetting everything else," Lara told George Ebro.
The WBA is holding their annual convention later this month in Panama and hopefully everything can be sorted out in their junior middleweight ranks.
