WBA/IBO junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara is still in hot pursuit of securing a fight with either Gennady Golovkin or Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Regarding a fight with Lara, Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) has shown very little interest as well, as he continues his campaign to unify the entire middleweight division.

The promoters behind Canelo and Golovkin are discussing the possibility of matching their fighters on Mexican Independence Day weekend in September - but both boxers have tough fights coming up.

On March 18th, Golovkin will defend his IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight belts against Daniel Jacobs in New York's Madison Square Garden. On May 6th, Canelo will jump up to a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds to face countryman Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Lara's head trainer, Ronnie Shields, expects fireworks when Canelo and Golovkin finally collide in the ring - but he agrees with several other experts who believe Canelo's style of fighting is lacking the necessary ingredients to hand Golovkin his first career defeat.

"I think it will be a good fight. The thing about Canelo, he’s not the type of guy to move around a lot, he wants you to come straight forward to him so he has an opportunity to hit you because he really believes in his power. I think Golovkin is the much stronger fighter and I think he probably takes the better punch. This is why I would have lean towards ‘GGG’ in this fight," Shield told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.

"Golovkin brings a lot of good things to the table and he’s such a smart fighter and this is why this guy is the undisputed middleweight champion of the world right now, because he’s good, smart and can punch. He can punch with both hands, so you really have to have the right style to beat a guy like Golovkin, and I don’t think Canelo has it."
