WBA/IBO junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13KOs) has come ripping back at Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs).
In July of 2014, Canelo won a close twelve round split decision over Lara at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Since their fight, there have been a wide variety of opinions with some observers crediting Canelo with a solid win, others believing Lara was robbed, and some viewing the fight as a draw.
After a brief stint at middleweight, Canelo is returning to the junior middleweight division on September 17th, when he challenges Liam Smith for the WBO world championship. Lara is considered to be the top fighter at 154.
During a recent press conference to promote the fight with Smith, Canelo explained why he selected the British champion over Lara.
"First thing with Erislandy Lara, I fought with him and beat him already. That's the past, I beat him already and nobody wants to see a boring fighter like him in a boring fight. He's a boring fighter. That's the past, I'm over that," Canelo explained to BoxingScene.com's Declan Taylor.
"Liam Smith is the fighter that I need to fight in September. He has speed, power, throws to the body, very strong, intelligent and he comes to fight."
Lara blew his top upon reading those comments and issued a statement to BoxingScene.com in response to Canelo.
"He says I'm boring? That's fine and I say he's a p*ssy! What's his excuse for Golovkin? He's not boring enough? Canelo is a spoiled brat who's lost all respect from boxing fans and especially all fans in Mexico. All that's left to do now is borrow his promoter's fishnets and high heels. As a matter a fact, here's a bet for you - we fight again and the loser takes Victoria Secrets pictures with Oscar," stated Lara.
