Kubrat Pulev Knocks Out Alexander Ustinov, Culcay Wins

By Alexey Sukachev & Per Ake Persson

Hamburg, Germany - Jack Culcay-Keth (13-0, 9 KOs) impressively stopped Briton Mark Thompson (24-2, 14 KOs) at 2:45 of the fifth round. Culcay was the busier, quicker fighter in the first three rounds but Thompson, who looked well prepared but a bit rusty, came on in the fourth. Culcay opened up in the fifth and had Thompson on the ropes and Jack poured it on with the challenger taking some punches, avoiding some but not punching back. A right uppercut stunned the challenger and it was stopped. Too soon it seemed but then again Thompson didn´t fire back.

Kubrat Pulev (17-0, 9KOs) knocked out previously undefeated Alexander Ustinov (27-1, 21KOs), close to 6'8 and over 300-pounds, in the eleventh round of an IBF eliminator for the top spot in the rankings. BoxingScene had it 99-91 at the time of stoppage - for the Bulgarian, who showed he is ready for a world title shot.

Pulev was outboxing Ustinov in the early rounds and landing right hands at will. Ustinov would show his power by shaking up Pulev whenever a hard punch came through. Pulev was still outboxing Ustinov throughout the fight with a good jab, and hard shots, but he always had to be on guard for hard shots. He was wobbled in the seventh, but fired back at Ustinov with several well placed shots. In the eleventh, the big giant was taking a lot of punishment and there was a delayed reaction as Ustinov went down to a knee for the full count.

David Graf (8-0, 6 KOs) won a six round unanimous decision over Martin Grainger (8-6, 3 KOs). Graf dominated in every round.

Reda Zam Zam (27-1, 13 KOs) won a six round unanimous decision over Ciro Ciano (7-9-4, 1 KO).

2012 Olympian Enrico Koelling (1-0) made his pro debut and won a six round unanimous decision over Pablo Sosa (2-3-1, 1 KO).

Ustinov is big and lacking skills but he came to fight. As far as Pulev is concerned I am not sure how he would do against Wlad but he looks to be the real deal. Pulev was pushing that 300…
