BoxingScene.com recently caught up with WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Kovalev was there to catch the Guerrero-Kamegai fight card that ended up being an early candidate for Fight of the Year Honors.
The undefeated Russian has been linked to WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson for close to a year now. Stevenson just fought last month when he had a tougher than expected fight against Andrzej Fonfara. Even though Stevenson won the fight, he was knocked down and didn't dominate in the manner many expected.
Kovalev said he wasn't surprised that Fonfara had some success. "I didn't think anything of it. I wasn't surprised that he did it but I wanted to do what he did. I wanted to do it myself."
Up next for Kovalev is an August 2nd battle against the undefeated but largely unknown Blake Caparello (19-0-1) of Australia that will be televised by HBO. Even though Kovalev still wants an unification fight with Stevenson, he said that all of his focus is on Caparello.
"He's a good fighter. He's undefeated you know. He's the most important fight right now because he's next," Kovalev told BoxingScene.com.
