Former light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev is really looking forward to the middleweight collision between IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC world champion Gennady Golovkin and Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

"My opinion is that the two are great champions. I do not have a prediction. But I believe in Gennady and I want him to get the victory against Canelo, because he is my friend and I support him one hundred percent," Kovalev recently told reporters.

Kovalev views the contest as being very close, but he gives Golovkin the edge to win.

"I think the fight is 50-50 because they are great champions, but I think it goes more for Gennady Golovkin. Because I believe in him more . But the fight will be 50-50. It's very interesting," Kovalev said.

"Canelo has had great experience with big opponents, he has fought more like a pro than Gennady, but Gennady has a great experience as an amateur, I think he only lost four or five fights. He is very strong."

Several years ago, Canelo and Golovkin had sparred together in Big Bear, California. Kovalev, who at the time was working with Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez, was present.

"I the sparring in Big Bear when I trained there. It was very good. Very interesting. Canelo answered and Golovkin pushed him . But Canelo was very young back then, he was like a teenager. Now he is like a man and going to climb to 160 pounds and will have more power. That will help against Gennady. It's a very interesting fight," Kovalev said.
