Koki Kameda: I'm Disappointed, Think It's Time To Retire

Chicago - Japan's Kohei Kono survived a punishing low blow in the early rounds to retain his WBA super flyweight title Friday with a unanimous 12-round decision over countryman Koki Kameda. Kono (31-8-1, 13 knockouts) knocked Kameda down with a straight right hand in the second round of the action-packed fight at the UIC Pavilion venue. Kameda (33-2, 18 knockouts) was penalized by the referee Celestino Ruiz in the third round for low blows, forcing Kono to take a knee at one point.

Chicago - Three-time world champion Koki Kameda challenges reigning World Boxing Association super flyweight champion Kohei Kono on Friday in the first title bout between Japanese fighters staged in the United States. Kameda, a 28-year-old southpaw nicknamed "The Fist of Osaka", has won 11 fights in a row entering the Chicago matchup while Kono, 34, fights outside his homeland for the first time after a 10-month layoff since he drew Dominican Norberto Jimenez in his first title defense.

CHICAGO, UIC Pavilion - It wasn't pretty as reigning WBA super flyweight world champion Kohei Kono (31-8-1, 13 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over former three division champion Koki Kameda (33-2, 18 KOs) as the televised opener of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Spike. The scores were 115-109, 116-108 and 113-111. It was the first time in history where two Japanese fighters collided for a world title on American soil. Kono also turned back Kameda's attempt to become the first Japanese fighter to win four world titles in four weight divisions.

WBA super flyweight champion Kohei Kono (30-8-1, 13KOs) will defend his title against Koki Kameda (33-1, 18KOs), who attempts to capture his fourth divisional title, on October 16th at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Kameda has previously captured world titles at light flyweight, flyweight and bantamweight.

By Rick Reeno Kono-Kameda has been talked about for some time and finally has a date and a home. Kameda signed on with adviser Al Haymon earlier this year (his brothers Tomoki and Daiki are signed with Haymon as well). Both fighters will be coming off a decent stretch of inactivity. Kameda has been out of the ring since last November, but Kono has been away just as long with his last fight taking place in December. The fight will take place as on October 16th as part of a Premier Boxing Champions card from the UIC Pavillion in Chicago. Spike TV will carry the card. In the main event, as BoxingScene.com previously reported, light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16KOs) will return for the first time since the April knockout of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and takes on former WBO champion Nathan Cleverly (29-2, 15KOs) in the main event. The WBC International title will be at stake.
