According to WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan, a potential December fight with Juan Manuel Marquez is in jeopardy. Golden Boy Promotions, who promote both, is attempting to finalize a Khan-Marquez deal to headline an HBO televised card on December 11.
Some insiders saw it coming. Marquez, the WBA/WBO lightweight champion, has requested a very high number for a potential fight with Khan. The last two fights for Marquez were showcased on HBO pay-per-view, against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a rematch with Juan Diaz. Both of the pay-per-views were successful. The fight with Mayweather generated over a million pay-per-view buys. The rematch with Diaz surprised expectations by generating close to 200,000 buys.
Once the Diaz pay-per-view figures came in, it was almost expected for Marquez to request a high number. With Marquez pushing away, WBA interim-champion Marcos Maidana is slowly becoming the frontrunner to face Khan in December. Maidana returns on Saturday in Argentina against DeMarcus Corley.
"The next fight I think is now pushing toward Maidana. And the reason for that is that we just can't tie up the purse, and the money issues with Marquez because he's asking for too much money, and I think that without fighting me, he's not going to get a big pay day," said Khan.
