Bolton’s Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) goes into next weekend’s meeting with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 early) as a huge underdog, but the 29-year-old is relishing the opportunity to upset the odds and believes he can walk away from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with a huge win and the linear middleweight title to his name.
Khan created shockwaves by taking the fight, he has The Metro that the boxing world will be left reeling next Saturday night.
He said: “Winning this fight will rank right up there in terms of achievements in British boxing. It will be one of the biggest upsets because of the fact I'm moving up two weight divisions for this fight. I know beating Canelo for the middleweight world title would be monumental, so all my focus is geared towards that.
“Following in the footsteps of great British fighters like Lloyd Honeyghan, who shocked Don Curry, or even recently when Tyson Fury went to Germany and beat Wladimir Klitschko, would be special for me.”
He added: “I grew up watching Lennox Lewis dominating the heavyweight division too and beating the likes of Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, and that's a path I've always wanted to go down—facing and beating the very best. Canelo is a great champion and one of the toughest fighters out there. If you want to go down in history you have to take on the biggest challenges. I'm ready to go against Canelo, I've done the work and can't wait to make history.”
Khan also said that he doesn’t just want to gate-crash the world scene, he also wants to join the British world title party by bringing home the lineal 160lbs belt that Alvarez wrenched from Migul Cotto last year. If he posts a win over the Mexican, he will join the list of some of the biggest upsets posted by a British boxer and will set himself up for some mammoth paydays.
