Algieri: We're All Fighting For a Shot at Floyd Mayweather

•May 27, 2015

Britain's former world champion Amir Khan is aiming to punch his ticket to a bout with Floyd Mayweather with a victory over Chris Algieri in a non-title welterweight fight on Friday. Khan, the former unified light-welterweight world champion who headlines a card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, is reckoned to have the inside track on a fight with unbeaten pound-for-pound king Mayweather. Although he's been chasing Mayweather for years, Khan insisted he won't look past Algieri.

The last time Amir Khan contends he took an opponent lightly, the British welterweight was knocked out by Danny Garcia. Chris Algieri isn’t nearly as big a puncher as Philadelphia’s Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs), who knocked out Khan in the fourth round of their July 2012 fight in Las Vegas. But Khan, listed as a 16-1 favorite by numerous Internet sports books, realizes he cannot afford to underestimate Algieri’s boxing ability or anything else about him.

Khan Denies He's Looking Ahead To Mayweather Tilt

Amir Khan says he isn’t thinking about a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather and insists he is focused entirely on taking on Chris Algieri in New York on Friday night. Khan has been tipped to be the next opponent for pound-for-pound king Mayweather after the undefeated welterweight beat Manny Pacquiao earlier this month in Las Vegas. The Bolton fighter believed he had a fight lined up with Mayweather last year only for the American to take on Marcos Maidana and then hand the Argentinian a rematch before facing Pacquiao. Despite the talk, the former two-time world champion insists he is thinking only about Algieri.

Amir Khan's Final Floyd Mayweather Audition

Jake Donovan

•May 27, 2015

By Jake Donovan - It’s a road that Amir Khan has been down plenty of times before in recent years. He’s learned to no longer get his hopes up, and now simply focus on the task at hand rather than the hypothetical scenario to which it could lead. So why is it that – as he prepares for a showdown with fellow former 140 lb. titlist Chris Algieri at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York (Friday, Spike TV, 9:00 p.m. ET) – the greater conversation piece seems to center around whether or not it will finally lead to a long-coveted showdown with Floyd Mayweather? There are plenty of theories abound, but Khan isn’t in the mood to hear them. “Look, there's people putting this fight down, and I don't know why,” Khan (30-3, 19KOs) says of a bout more than a few in the industry believe to be a mismatch. “At the end of the day, well, boxes well. I definitely have to be on my "A" game.” Khan has learned to bring his “A” game to his past couple of fights, learning to not assume that name value alone leads to his final destination. Assumption is what ultimately led to a 13-month layoff, even passing on a title fight opportunity because he didn’t want to jeopardize what he believed to be a done deal with Mayweather.

Virgil Hunter takes Amir Khan, 30-3 (19), into a 12-round non-title fight against Chris Algieri, 20-1 (8), at New York's Barclays Centre on Friday night with the unshakeable belief that his boxer will one day glide into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The 28-year-old joined Hunter after a shocking KO loss to Danny Garcia in 2012; the L.A.-based trainer has added some defensive nous to Khan’s game and believes that he is a few wins away from immortality.

The two-time world champion is preparing for his second fight at welterweight against Algieri in the American's home city, New York on Friday. With Mayweather having disposed of Manny Pacquiao and seemingly set for one last bout, Khan has been mentioned as a possible final foe for the American superstar - but the Bolton man insists that looking past his next opponent is a mistake he has made before and will not be repeating.

British star Amir Khan (30-3, 19KOs) admits that his back was against the wall when he selected former WBO 140-pound champion Chris Algieri as his opponent of choice for this coming Friday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. One of Khan's first selections was Adrien Broner. Khan says Broner refused to back away from his demand for a catch-weight, which is likely true considering Broner is making Shawn Porter fight him at 144-pounds on June 20th.
