Khabib-Mayfield Discussed For Rios vs. Alvarado Card

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com has been advised that another match being considered for the Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado undercard is a fight between WBA/IBO 140-pound champion Khabib Allakhverdiev (18-0, 8KOs) and unbeaten contender Karim Mayfield (17-0-1, 10KOs). The fight is not close to being done.

Khabib captured the vacant "regular" title last year with an eight round technical decision over previously undefeated Joan Guzman. Danny Garcia is the WBA's "super champion" at the weight.

Top Rank's VP Carl Moretti told BoxingScene a few days ago that "four different possibilities" are being discussed for the co-feature position to Rios-Alvarado. Another possibility mentioned last week is a welterweight encounter between undefeated contenders Wale "Lucky Boy" Omotoso and Jessie Vargas.

Rios-Alvarado II headlines an HBO televised card on March 30th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

I got the guy who beat Guzman. Mayfield is not good, he's fast...that's where it ends. He's gonna get sparked.

Very cool match-up. Allakhverdiev cannot allow this fight to turn into a clinch-fest.

Atleast it's some exposure for Khabib, but rather almost anyone else than Mayfield, who is a real hit, hold & wrestle artist (or wrestle, hold, then hit)... Still, Khabib should be too quick, hits too hard & is strong enough…

Not a bad match up. I would love to see Khabib in some of the the mix with some of the big names at 140.
