The legendary Mexican warrior Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. believes that there is a clear reason as to why the fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) and Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) is being pushed back further and further.
According to Chavez Sr., Canelo and his handlers are waiting until "Golovkin gets old."
The fight was in talks as early as last year, then in September of this year, and now it's being postponed against until next September - pursuant to a verbal agreement between the two camps.
Time is certainly on Canelo's side. He's only 26-years-old, while Golovkin is 34-years-old and turns 35 in April.
Golovkin is back in action this Saturday night, when he faces Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, while Canelo is back a week later against WBO junior welterweight world champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
"Nobody wants to fight Golovkin, and he, in turn, does not want to go up in weight to super middleweight where the opponents are better. So he was offered good money for the fight against Brook, a welterweight fighter, who [Golovkin] knows won't be able to anything," Chavez Sr. said.
One of the main factors in the discussions between Golovkin and Canelo is the weight. Canelo wanted him to come down to a catch-weight of 155-pounds and Golovkin wanted nothing less than the middleweight limit of 160.
Cutting weight is very important and could play a major role in any contest, says Chavez Sr. He says a single pound could be the difference between a fighter coming in fresh or coming in without energy.
"We know how important even one pound cane be. Even 50 grams can lose a title. The body is dried out, and it is not able to provide you with energy," Chavez Sr. said.
