Juan Manuel Lopez Receives Boxer of The Year Nod

By Rey Colon

As we anticipated on January 13, Juan Manuel Lopez, the undefeated WBO featherweight champion, received his award for "Boxer of the Year" from the Boxing Commission of Puerto Rico, while Wilfredo 'Papito' Vazquez, the WBO super bantamweight king, was awarded the Sixto Escobar Cup. The Boxing Commission of Puerto Rico held their annual awards.

Lopez, who was also presented with a painting as being the People's Champion, won the award for the third straight year. Felix "Tito" Trinidad received a trophy as the 'Champion of Champions'.

In other awards, McJoe Arroyo, as previously reported, was elected as Rookie of the Year, PR Best Boxing won Promoter of The Year, Alex Caraballo was selected as Trainer of the Year and Orlando Piñero got the Manager of the Year nod.

On the other hand, Venezuelan Gilberto Mendoza, president of the WBA, presented three awards, including two bands, one to Samuel Serrano, who was junior featherweight champion in 1979, and another former super bantamweight belt-holder, Victor Calleja, who was the first Fedelatin champion.
