Former champion Joseph Agbeko (29-4, 22KOs) was in talks to face IBF super bantamweight beltholder Jhonatan Romero in an HBO televised fight on August 17th but the negotiations fell through. BoxingScene.com reported earlier that Romero will face Kiko Martinez on the card. Agbeko is looking to make a full move to 122-pounds and hopes to get one of the big names at the weight.
"I really thought everything would work out well for me to fight Jhonatan Romero but unfortunately things didn't go as well as I thought and the fight fell out. This was going to be another big fight for me after losing to [Abner] Mares the second time, which I consider a technical loss. I believe he had a better corner than mine so they had a better game plan than we did and they took away the day," Agbeko said.
"I am working very hard in the and I hope to return in the ring in September. I am ready to fight any boxer at super bantamweight, [including] Guillermo Rigondeaux, Nonito Donaire and Leo Santa Cruz. I believe I will be a better boxer at 122 pounds and I want to come back strong and improve to impress my fans."
