The vice president of PR Best Boxing Promotions, Peter Rivera, has denied rumors that José "Chelo" Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KO's) is planning to retire. Gonzalez has been inactive since a TKO defeat in May 2013 to then WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns. Gonzalez, ahead 87-84 on all three of the official scorecards, retired on his stool after nine rounds citing a severe injury to his left wrist.
"No, he has not retired. He is training, ready to fight and we are moving a few pieces [for his planned return]. We hope to have him return in September, but we are missing a few little details. It will take place in Puerto Rico and the fight will serve as a way to get him ranked and then get him to where he was before," Rivera said.
