Jose Gonzalez's Return in Limbo After Ricky Burns Loss

The return of lightweight contender Jose 'Chelo' González (22-1, 17KOs) is still uncertain. Gonzalez suffered his first career defeat to WBO champion Ricky Burns in May. Gonzalez was up on the scorecards when he retired on his stool after nine rounds with a claimed wrist injury. All three judges had him up 87-84 at the time of the stoppage. Gonzalez has been spending time with his family, but has yet to return to the gym. There have been a lot of question marks on whether Gonzalez was actually injured or mentally broken by Burns.
Promoter Peter Rivera of Puerto Rico Best Boxing would like to have Gonzalez return before the end of the year.
"I want to make a fight for him before the end of the year. It's something that I have to discuss it with his team. I have not talked to them. We have to see what he wants to do," Rivera told Carlos Narvaez.
