Jorge Melendez Hopes To Return on a June Date

By Ryan Burton

Two weeks ago in Las Vegas, junior middleweight prospect Jorge "The Destroyer" Melendez (26-2) won his 13th fight in a row with a wicked 4th round knockout Saturday night against Ryan Davis. The fight was broadcast on Showtime Extreme as part of the Richard Abril-Sharif Bogere undercard.

The Puerto Rican fighter said that early on he could tell that his opponent wouldn't be able to withstand his power.  This was his first fight in Las Vegas and he was happy to have the best knockout on the fight card.

"This was my first time in Las Vegas. I am really excited to be able to fight on this big of a stage and to be able to produce this type of outcome in the fight," stated Melendez.  "Throughout the fight I knew that my power was getting to him. He wasn't able to take it and I knew it was just a matter of time."

A lot of fans aren't yet familiar with Melendez's style but he said that he aims to be a crowd pleasing fighter who isn't afraid to mix it up. He said that he likes to bring the fight to his opponents.

"I like to straight forward and brawl. I like to get in there and give the fans the fights they like. That's the type of fights they like in Puerto Rico and that's what I want to give them," said Melendez.

Melendez and his manager Jose Acevedo both said that they want to remain busy. They are looking to stage another fight in June. Melendez is promoted by Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy.

"My team has been talking about a few different dates but they are hoping to get
me a fight in June in New York before the Puerto Rican Day Parade," Acevedo told BoxingScene.com.
