The verdict is in. Moments ago in Buenos Aires, former champion Jorge "La Hyena" Rodrigo Barrios, 35-years-old, was sentenced to four years in prison for a manslaughter charge. The charge is related to an accident which occured in January 2010. Barrios was traveling in his car at a very high speed and lost control of his vehicle.
After losing control of his vehicle, Barrios crashed into another vehicle - and that vehicle slammed into Yamila Gonzalez, 20-years-old, who was crossing the street with her family members. Gonzalez, who was pregnant, was killed. Her mother and other family members suffered injuries. Barrios fled the scene and had another accident a few blocks away. He later turned himself in to authorities. Barrios did not test postive for any controlled substances or alcohol.
While it was never confirmed that Barrios had been drinking at the time of the accident, it was determined that the boxer was using his cell phone.
The lawyer for the family of Gonzalez was requesting a setence of twelve years. The three judge panel of Juan Manuel Sueyro, Oscar Alemano and Eduardo Angulo ruled otherwise.
