Jonathan Oquendo, the WBO's number one ranked super bantamweight, could be facing criminal charges following the death of his girlfriend, Melanie Miranda. Last weekend, the two of them were involved in an accident while riding on an ATV. They collided with another vehicle and both suffered injuries. Oquendo broke his right elbow and suffered several minor injuries, while his girlfriend slipped into a coma and days later the doctors declared her brain dead before turning off the life support.

According to sources, Oquendo was driving the ATV on a road which doesn't allow these type of vehicles. And, neither Oquendo or his girlfriend was wearing a helmet, elbow pads or other forms of protection as required by law.

The injuries forced Oquendo to withdraw from his undercard bout on the Juan Manuel Lopez-Orlando Salido undercard on March 10th.
