Jonathan Oquendo: Arce Told Me I'll Get My Title Shot

By Jhonny Gonzalez

Super bantamweight contender Jonathan Oquendo (21-2, 14KOs) said he was promised a title shot, when speaking face to face with WBO king Jorge Arce, who recently traveled to Puerto Rico to receive his title from the World Boxing Organization. Oquendo had recently challenged Arce in the press. When the Mexican champion noticed Oquendo at the WBO's gathering, he approached the Puerto Rican contender.

"He recognized me. He asked if I was Jonathan Oquendo and said, 'You're the one who'll fight me, if God permits.' I said yes. I want that fight," Oquendo told Jessica Andino. "What I want is to fight him and that motivates me to continue working hard. I know I have to fight [him] smart. I can not risk a lot and I have to take it round by round."
