•Mar 21, 2017

Jonathan Maicelo hoped that his impressive victory over lightweight contender Jose Felix Jr. would lead to another significant fight. A month after flooring Felix five times on a his way to a unanimous-decision win, Maicelo might be on the verge making his HBO debut. Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. is considering putting a bout between Peru’s Maicelo (25-2, 12 KOs, 1 NC) and Mexican veteran Ray Beltran (32-7-1, 20 KOs, 1 NC) on a May 20 card in Newark, New Jersey, that’ll feature Terence Crawford in the main event.

Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas - The career of Jose Felix Jr (35-2-1, 27 KOs) hit a major skid on Friday night, when he was knocked down five times in a ten round decision loss to Jonathan Maicelo (25-2, 12 KOs) in the main event of Top Rank card that was televised on UniMas.

A year after losing his first world title fight, lightweight contender Jonathan Maicelo hopes Anthony Crolla gives him a second chance. The native Peruvian has won both bouts since Darleys Perez beat him convincingly in their 12-round fight for the WBA world lightweight championship last Jan. 9 in Santa Ynez, California. His easy victory over Ghana’s Samuel Amoako (21-6, 15 KOs) on Friday night in Philadelphia improved Maicelo’s record to 23-2.

Jonathan Maicelo might’ve retired had Brandon Bennett beaten him in their August 28 clash. That would’ve made two consecutive defeats and the third since April 2013 for the 32-year-old lightweight contender from Peru. Beating Bennett (19-2, 8 KOs) in such definitive fashion made Maicelo reconsider his immediate future in boxing, though, one that could include aligning with powerful adviser Al Haymon and another title shot. Cincinnati’s Bennett is represented by Haymon and was considered the ‘A’ side in their 10-round, 135-pound fight in Washington, D.C., which Maicelo (22-2, 12 KOs) won by unanimous decision (99-91, 97-93, 97-93).

The lone loss on Jonathan Maicelo’s record left the Peruvian lightweight contender wondering whether he’d ever get the title shot he has dreamed about since childhood. His perseverance paid off, however, and Maicelo has a chance Friday night to completely redeem himself less than two years after suffering an eighth-round knockout defeat to Russia’s Rustam Nagaev (27-7-1, 17 KOs). The 31-year-old Maicelo (21-1, 12 KOs, 1 NC), a North Bergen, N.J., resident, will challenge Colombia’s Darleys Perez (31-1, 20 KOs) for the interim WBA lightweight championship. ESPN2 will televise their 12-round fight as the main event of a “Friday Night Fights” broadcast from Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif. (9 p.m. ET).

Darleys Perez: Lightweight Division Wide Open Right Now

Darleys Perez had no regrets following his June ‘13 narrow points loss to Yuriorkis Gamboa, which aired live on HBO. An unbeaten lightweight at the time, Perez offered a respectable account of himself, but fell prey to a couple of calls—a questionable knockdown in the opening round and then a no-call when Gamboa appeared to go down in round 11—to come up short in their interim title fight. Lending credence to the old adage that losses are meant to be taken as learning experiences, the 31-year old from Colombia has the look of a different fighter during his current three-fight win streak. He plans to show off the new and improved version this Friday in the season premiere of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, as he headlines versus Jonathan Maicelo in a 12-round lightweight bout at Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California.

Tureano Johnson Dominates, Jonathan Maicelo Wins

A two-minute fourth round and a single bizarre scorecard couldn’t steal the thunder from the easy winner in the televised opener. 30-year old Peruvian Lightweight Jonathan Maicelo (20-1, 12 KO), 134 ½, of North Bergen, New Jersey, used superior speed of hand and foot to control pressuring Armenian 32-year old Art Hovhannisyan (17-2-2, 9 KO), 134 ½, of Glendale, California. Hovhannisyan had some success early, and both men bit down in an exciting fifth, but their faces told the tale at the end. Hovhannisyan’s badly swollen mug spoke to the long night he’d had. Press though he might, more often he was taking than receiving.
