Jonathan Gonzalez To Return on January 4 Against Ennis

By Rick Reeno

Sources have informed that unbeaten junior middleweight Jonathan Gonzalez (15-0, 13KOs) will return on January 4th in Miami, Florida. The opponent is likely going to be veteran Dereck "Pooh" Ennis (23-3-1, 13), who holds victories over Gabe Rosado among others.

ESPN will reportedly televise the fight as part of their 2013 debut of Friday Night Fights.

Gonzalez last fought in September against former WBO champion Sergei Dzinziruk. Personal issues prevented Gonzalez from properly training for the fight and he came in well above the junior middleweight limit of 154. Gonzalez, who weighed in at 163, was sluggish and out of shape, but still did enough to earn a decision victory over Dzinziruk. However, the judges disagreed. The fight was scored as a twelve round draw - with one judge going for Gonzalez with a card of 117-111, another scoring 114-114 for the draw, and the third having a tally of 115-113 for the former champ.
He lowered his stock. Couldn't get the KO with after cheating the scales.
He had no stock before, getting a draw while coming in 10lbs heavier against Sergie is a better position than he was in before the fight.
Even though he didn't win against Sergie I think he raised his stock with a draw against him going from a totally untested prospect.
He lowered his stock. Couldn't get the KO with after cheating the scales.

The fact that he fought Sergie with only half the fights and did it out of shape tells me that if he trains like a demon and gets in top shape, he could go very far. He has to get…
