John Murray has vacated his EBU lightweight title in order to pursue a domestic showdown with Dagenham’s Kevin Mitchell. Frank Warren recently announced that Murray-Mitchell has been signed for a yet to be announced date and location. Murray would not have been able to defend the title against Mitchell as EBU rules forbid fighters from challenging for the belt when coming off a defeat – Kevin lost to Michael Katsidis last year and has not fought since.
The EBU have paired Gavin Rees and Ireland’s Andy Murray for the vacant belt, with purse bids expected by May 2nd. Rees is a former British holder at lightweight; he vacated that belt in February due to a nose injury. Murray has a 24-0 (12) record but will take a big step up in class when he faces the former WBA light-welterweight titleholder.
