The WBC welterweight champion made weight on his first try Friday for his 147-pound title unification fight against Errol Spence Jr. Porter weighed exactly 147 pounds when he got on the California State Athletic Commission’s scale at the Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel.

Mario Barrios and Batyr Akhmedov were ordered more than a month ago by the World Boxing Association (WBA) to negotiate terms for a vacant title fight. Little has since been said about the pairing, but it has resurfaced in a big way. The evenly matched showdown between unbeaten rising contenders will serve as a preliminary bout to the Sept. 28 welterweight title unification bout between Errol Spence and Shawn Porter, which takes place at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
The show will go on for Sergey Lipinets. Mere hours after learning that originally scheduled opponent John Molina Jr. withdrew from their scheduled fight (as first reported by BoxingScene.com), the former 140-pound titlist will now face Philippines’ Jayar Inson, according to Lipinets’ manager Alex Vaysfeld.
John Molina Jr. has literally backed out of this weekend’s Vegas blockbuster event. BoxingScene.com has learned that the veteran contender has withdrawn from his planned welterweight crossroads bout with former 140-pound titlist Sergey Lipinets after reportedly suffering a back injury during fight week.
