John Molina Targets Title Showdown, Wants Abril Next

By Luis Sandoval

Lightweight contender John Molina Jr is back in the gym in Oxnard, CA with Robert Garcia after coming off an impressive win over hard hitting Dannie Williams back in January on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

While Molina has resumed training, he is still looking for an opponent at the moment. BoxingScene caught up with Molina as he expressed he’d like to get in the ring with current WBA Lightweight champion Richar Abril.

“First and foremost Richar Abril. I think it’ll be a great fight. His style is very boring but you mix it with my style and it should be intriguing. We’re not going to let him hold me as much and Robert Garcia already figured out that puzzle once and we can figure it out again” said Molina.

Molina is still in search of his first world title and doesn’t mind taking on an awkward and elusive guy like Abril. Richar may have dropped the “D” from his name but he is still very defensive minded and his lack of consistent offense leaves a lot to be desired in terms of action seen in the ring. But while Molina understands Abril isn’t an easy fight, he feels he can be victorious over the reigning champion given his physical strengths.

“It’s definitely going to be difficult but like I said we’re here are Robert Garcia’s Boxing Academy with world class training and world class everything. Robert already deciphered that puzzle once and we can do it again. I think the goal would be to go in there with Abril and just bully him and not letting him be the matador. I’m not 5’4 like Sharif Bogere so I can be the stronger guy in there and I feel I’ll be the stronger guy in there. The fight is intriguing and I would love that fight and if Richard Abril’s people agree to do it I’m sure my people will agree to do it [too]” Molina would tell BoxingScene.

Molina also revealed he plans to stay at Lightweight a while longer before moving up to the deeper Junior Welterweight division. He’d like to get a title first at Lightweight to go into the 140 pound division with some leverage. For now, he will continue to train and hopes to get the second title shot of his career and land a fight with Abril.

I like Molina and think he can beat a lot of people but Abril is a tough match-up for him. probably won't be able to hit him in the ass with a handful of rice.

i like molina, give him the fight if the wbc doesn't offer him a shot at their vacant title. abril could fight beltran or vazquez (not sure what network would really want to pick that up), because thinking of demarco/molina…
