Joe Gallagher: record, next fight and profile →
Joe Gallagher, the trainer and manager of WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith, is looking to get some clarification on his fighter's next move - hoping that he lands a showdown with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez. On June 1, Smith returned with a crushing knockout of Hassan N'Dam on the Anthony Joshua-Andy Ruiz undercard at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith is ready and willing to fight toe to toe with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Earlier this month, Canelo scored a twelve round unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs to unify the IBF, WBA, WBC middleweight titles at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Joe Gallagher, the head trainer of WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith, was very surprised when his boxer was named as a potential option for WBC, WBA, IBF middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
Veteran trainer Joe Gallagher is confident that former world champion Anthony Crolla will not disgrace himself when he steps in the ring with WBA, WBO Vasiliy Lomachenko. This Friday night, at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Crolla attempt to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport.
Joe Gallagher, trainer of WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith, says a sought after dream fight with Andre Ward is likely not going to happen. Smith, who had a banner year in 2018 by winning the World Boxing Super Series tournament with a knockout of George Groves, was really angling to get Ward back the ring - and Smith had no issue with moving up in weight to make the fight happen.
WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith (25-0, 18 KOs) is aiming to have a major fight at the end of May. And former unified super middleweight and light heavyweight champion Andre Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) is one of the names on his short-list.
If WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith (25-0, 18 KOs) had his way, he would collide with former unified super middleweight and light heavyweight champion, Andre Ward. Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) retired from the sport in 2017, a few months after stopping Sergey Kovalev in their Las Vegas rematch.
Callum Smith’s coach Joe Gallagher expects his boxer to peak and shine in the Ali Trophy Super Middleweight Final against George Groves in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on September 28. “On the night all will be unveiled,” said Joe Gallagher. “The thing with these two fighters; both have the power, both carry serious power. That’s what makes it exciting. One shot, that’s all it may take for this fight. I know everyone will say George is experienced, being there many times and Callum is the young kid coming through,” said Gallagher before adding:
Former British lightweight champion Scotty Cardle (22-2-1, 7 KOs) has parted ways with trainer Joe Gallagher. The 28-year-old, who made his pro debut with Matchroom and Gallagher in 2012, has lost two of his last three fights with a six-round points victory over Lee Connelly sandwiched in between. Cardle’s two-year reign as British champion ended at the hands of Robbie Barrett (MD 12), April 2017, and was then demolished in two rounds by current British 135lbs champion Lewis Ritson in March this year.
It was certainly a courageous effort from Liam Smith (26-2-1, 14 KOs) who went twelve tough rounds versus WBO 154-pound titlist Jaime Munguia this past weekend from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. It was Munguia's first defense of the title that he won in May, after a four round demolition of Sadam Ali.
