Brooklyn, New York - Former champion Joan Guzman (30-0-1, 17KOs) is training at Gleason's Gym for a November ring return. Guzman has been inactive since last December's fight with Jason Davis. In a fight scheduled for 140 [give or take a pound], Guzman came in at 144.5-pounds. It wasn't the first, second or third time where Guzman was overweight on the scale. But, he promises that a "new Guzman" is going to appear on November 18th in the Dominican Republic, when he faces Armando Robles (17-1-1, 9KOs). The fight is slated for 140-pounds and Guzman has already squeezed himself close to 150, with a little less than a month to go before the weigh-in. Photos by Jose Zabala.
Trainer Don Saxby acknowledges the difficult task he has ahead of him with pupil Joan Guzman. Guzman, a 35-year-old former three division champ with an undefeated record of 30-0-1 (17 KO), has been inactive since serving an eight month suspension for testing positive for the banned diuretic Furosemide following his match with Jason Davis in December of last year. Originally a second round stoppage win for Guzman, the bout was changed to a no contest. To further exacerbate the situation, Guzman missed the contracted weight by two and a half pounds, which was Guzman's third such incident since 2008.
Former three division champ Joan Guzman says he is ready to move on with his career, beginning with an October 15 bout in his hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic against an opponent to be named. The bout will be promoted by his own outfit JG Boxing Entertainment, which he runs alongside manager Jose Nunez, with the contracted weight at 145 pounds.
Joan Guzman grew used to being feted as a future pound-for-pound superstar.
