Former champion Jhonny Gonzalez (52-8 45KOs) is in the final stage of his preparation for his upcoming fight against Nicaraguan Eusebio "Cascabel" Osejo on Feb. 23 in Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo, and the fight will be teleivsed by Televisa Sports as part of their "Sabados De Corona."
In his last match, Gonzalez lost an eight round technical decision to Daniel Ponce De Leon last September. Gonzalez has a rematch clause. On Monday it was learned that Ponce De Leon's March opponent, Jayson Velez, withdrew with an injury. Gonzalez is planning to pursue the Ponce (44-4, 35KOs) rematch as soon as this fight is over.
"We are training hard, everything is going as planned. My staff has done a great job. I want to prove in the ring that I have the ability to carry the world championship and I want the rematch with Ponce De Leon as soon as possible. Everyone will see that we are back. In the rematch we are going to change the strategy. We have to be more attentive because he is a fighter who throws his punches while coming in with his head first. Osejo will certainly serve as a parameter to see how we will perform in the return match for the world championship," said Gonzalez.
