In an earlier article on BoxingScene.com, the "regular" featherweight champion of the World Boxing Association (WBA), Panamanian Celestino "Pelenchín" Caballero (36-4, 23KOs), verbally attacked the World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (52-7, 45KOs) of Mexico.
In the article, Caballero called Gonzalez "a coward," claiming the Mexican fighter failed to deliver on a promised unification. Gonzalez will defend his title on September 15th against Daniel Ponce De Leon.
"I will fight with anyone and I am willing to unify against the WBA champion. It would be an honor to unify with Chris John, the super champion. Celestino is below him as the "regular" champion or interim champion as you call it. But for me and the world the true featherweight champion of the WBA is Chris John," Gonzalez said.
"Celestino is talking about cowards ... he should look in a mirror. He put together pure excuses not to fight Mickey Garcia. I would say that clearly demonstrates how he is and how he fights. He thinks that he can pick the date and location, telling the promoter that you won't fight in California because that's where Mikey Garcia lives. In the ring there are only two fighters. Why are you afraid? Do not shy away from Mikey Garcia. Prove that you are a true champion."
