WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez has dedicated his upcoming fight to Mexican wrestling superstar Perro Aguayo Jr. (El Hijo del Perro). Over the weekend, 35-year-old Aguayo died after a tragic accident during a wrestling match in Tijuana with former WWE superstar Rey Mysterio Jr. Aguayo was knocked out during the match, he was unresponsive and pronounced dead upon his arrival to a local hospital.
Gonzalez will defend his belt against once-beaten Gary Russell Jr. in a Showtime televised main event on Saturday night from the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"I'm going to dedicate this next fight to me friend Pedro "Perro" Aguayo. Any rudeness that he showed in the ring was pushed to the side when it came to helping people. He was always organizing events with children and invited me to participate. I think most people will remember him for that and for his great deeds inside the ring," Gonzalez said.
