Jesus Cuellar: record, next fight and profile →
Argentine puncher Jesus Cuellar will be back as soon as possible in 2017 - but in the super featherweight division. Back on December 10th in California, Cuellar lost the World Boxing Association "regular" featherweight title to Mexico's Abner Mares.
Los Angeles, Calif - In the main event of Saturday night's Showtime broadcast, Abner Mares (30-2-1) became a four-time champion when he dethroned WBA featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar (28-2).
Los Angeles, Calif. - Four-time champion and newly crowned WBA featherweight champion Abner Mares (30-2-1, 15KOs) was still beaming after his split decision victory over Jesus Cuellar at the Galen Center on the USC campus. The bout headlined a Showtime Championship Boxing doubleheader.
Showtime’s broadcast of Abner Mares versus Jesus Cuellar peaked at 377,000 viewers on Saturday night and averaged 327,000, according to statistics released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.
Terence Crawford’s domination of John Molina Jr. was the most-watched of six bouts broadcast by HBO and Showtime on Saturday, either live or on delay. Crawford-Molina peaked at 871,000 viewers and averaged 806,000 viewers, according to figures released by Nielsen Media Research on Tuesday. The Crawford-Molina match mostly went head-to-head with Showtime’s offering of the Abner Mares-Jesus Cuellar featherweight title fight, which peaked at 327,000 viewers and averaged 368,000.
Experience matters. Abner Mares drew on a well of as much of it as almost any current fighter. Dating back to his run at 118 lbs., Mares has never been shy about taking on tough outs. He won Showtime’s bantamweight tournament. At 122, he took on an Anselmo Moreno many might have avoided. He got past a shocking knockout loss to Jhonny Gonzalez, giving Leo Santa Cruz a hell of a fight last year.
