Jessie Vargas: record, next fight and profile →
Mikey Garcia sat on the sidelines for nearly 2 ½ years in the prime of his career as he squared away a contentious contractual dispute with former promoter Top Rank. Having lost a key earning window in his career, the lifelong Los Angeles native didn’t want to repeat the same mistakes he’s made in the past by tying himself down long term.
Four-division champion Mikey Garcia took the tall task to climb from 135 to 147 pounds in order to fight Errol Spence Jr. in March. His valiant effort ultimately was unsuccessful in the one-sided beatdown, but that didn’t deter the 32-year-old Mexican fighter to continue campaigning in his career as a welterweight, just as he’ll do so again Feb. 29 when he takes on Jessie Vargas in Texas on DAZN in his Matchroom Boxing debut.
Mikey Garcia didn’t have a firm grasp on what fight was next when he was first courted by Eddie Hearn more than a year ago. What he did know was that it wasn’t the right time to sign on with fledging over-the-top (OTT) media service DAZN.

There’s no getting around the fact that the last fight for Mikey Garcia was the worst of his career. Not only does the former four-division titlist own it, but is willing to return to the scene of the crime in order to exorcise past demons. Months of speculation as to when, where and on what platform he would next appear came to an end as Garcia was introduced as the latest boxer to ink a deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing DAZN. His debut on the over-the-top (OTT) media service will come in a Feb. 29 welterweight clash versus former two-division titlist Jessie Vargas (29-2-2, 11KOs), taking place at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
