Jessie Vargas and Liam Smith collide in a must-win Super-Welterweight clash at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday April 30, live worldwide on DAZN, leading the undercard for the historic clash between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, brought to you by Matchroom Boxing and Most Valuable Promotions.
Promoter Eddie Hearn says the postponed clash between former world champions Jessie Vargas and Liam Smith could be rescheduled for April. Vargas was set to take on Smith in a main event clash on February 5 in Phoenix, live on DAZN, but Vargas was forced to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19.
What was once a crowded fight day is now down to just one major boxing event in the United States. A junior middleweight clash between Liam Smith and Jessie Vargas is once again placed on hold. The bout was due to headline a February 5 DAZN show from Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, only for the event to be scrapped as Vargas was forced to withdraw after testing positive for Covid.
Jessie Vargas and Liam Smith officially have a new date and a new site for their junior middleweight match. BoxingScene.com has learned that they will now fight February 5 at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The co-feature of that show is a 115-pound rematch between Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Carlos Cuadras.
A long-discussed showdown between a pair of former titlists appears to have a home. BoxingScene.com has learned that The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is in play to host a forthcoming junior middleweight clash between Liverpool’s Liam Smith and locally-based Jessie Vargas. Matchroom Boxing has placed a request with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to host the bout on January 29 at the intimate venue. The matter will be addressed during the monthly commission agenda hearing scheduled for Monday, December 13.
Liam Smith claimed bragging rights in Liverpool as he stopped Anthony Fowler in round eight of their super welterweight showdown. The two men were going head to head at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, on a Matchroom Boxing event that was broadcast live on DAZN.
LAS VEGAS - Like many, Jessie Vargas will be a very interested observer of Saturday’s FOX pay-per-view showdown pitting 8-division world champion Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2) against Yordenis Ugas (26-4). The fight takes place at the T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip.
Liam Smith (29-3-1) is still upset over his May 7th unanimous decision loss to Magoed Kurbanov. Most observers felt the fight was close as did two judges who scored the fight 115-113 for Kurbanov but the third judge turned in a head scratching 117-112 scorecard.
Jessie Vargas (29-3-2) is still waiting for a fight date. The former two-division champion was supposed to return to the ring on May 8th on the Canelo Alvarez-Billy Joe Saunders undercard that will be streamed by DAZN from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He was about halfway through his training camp when he found out that he wouldn’t be fighting in Cinco de Mayo weekend.
The last time former junior welterweight and welterweight world titlist Jessie Vargas was in the ring was in the main event of one of the final cards before the coronavirus pandemic shut boxing down for several months.
