Earlier this month Jessie Vargas (27-1) captured the WBO welterweight title with a 9th round knockout of the previously undefeated Sadam Ali (22-1). The bout served as the chief support to the Luis Ortiz-Sadam Ali main event that headlined a HBO Boxing After Dark doubleheader.
The fight was Vargas' first under the guidance of Dewey Cooper. The duo worked hard on cutting off the ring in training camp and the fruits of their labor was evident throughout the fight.
"It was an amazing performance. I did everything I wanted to do. I did everything that I set my mind to do and like I said, I would knock him out and that is what I was able to do. I wasn't being cocky or anything - that is just what I said I would do and I did it. I said he were going to make him quit and that is what he we did," said Vargas.
In a video by Rahman Mcgilbery, WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia said that he would be interested in facing Vargas. The Las Vegas based Vargas said that he would very interested in facing the Philadelphia native.
"At the top of my list, Danny Garcia has the WBC title and I have the WBO title. It is definitely a fight that I want. I want to unify the belts. Now that I know that he wants the fight, sh*t, let's sit down and talk business. Let's see if we can make it happen as soon as possible. I know there are other opportunities as well. It is all up to my manager Cameron Dunkin and my promoter Bob Arum and Todd DuBoef. Now that I know that Danny Garcia wants the fight I am glad because it should be easier to make the fight happen," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.
