Jessie Vargas: I Want To Conquer Welterweight Division!

By Ryan Burton

On December 15th former two-division champion Jessie Vargas (27-2) will return to the ring after a 13 month ring hiatus. Vargas lost a spirited decision to Manny Pacquiao in his last ring outing and is looking to regain the position he had in the division prior to the Pacquiao fight.

He will face Aaron Herrera (33-7-1) in what will be his first fight under the Premier Boxing Champions banner after breaking ties with his long time promoter Top Rank. Vargas previously held titles at both 140 and 147 pounds.

"Of course I want to be one of the top welterweights in the world and I want to conquer the division. I want to regain my title again and that is my mindset at the moment. I have my advisers Lupe Valencia and Al Haymon to guide my career and I am sure they are looking for bigger and better opportunities but first we have to get through Aaron Herrera on December 15th," Vargas explained.

Herrera has faced many of the sport's top prospects and Vargas expects him to lay it all on the line. For that reason he believes the fight will produce fireworks.

Vargas recently told that he is interested in facing WBA/WBC welterweight champion Keith Thurman, IBF champion Errol Spence and former two-division champion Danny Garcia but to get any of those fights he first must get past Herrera.

"I expect an entertaining fight for the fans. It will be in Lancaster, California and televised on FS1. I always come to entertain for the fans and give them excitement. I want to make sure they get their money's worth and that is what they are going to get. There will be two warriors in the ring that always come to fight and what I mean by that is that we won't back down. Herrera isn't known to back down and neither am I so it will be an entertaining match up," Vargas told

LOL! I'll ask for the umpteenth time... Does Vargas even have any fans at all? For real? He thinks he's more popular than he actually is. Still Vargas isn't a bad boxer. He needs to start fighting fringe level contenders…
