On Thursday evening Jessie Vargas (20-0) defeated Aron Martinez (18-2-1) in the main event of a special edition of ESPN's Friday Night Fights. The fight headlines a card taking place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in las Vegas.
In a recent interview on The Boxing Lab (BoxingScene's official audio show), Vargas told us that he likes to stand and trade with his opponents and feels that he is a strong inside fighter.
"My coach doesn't like me doing it but I love to brawl. I like fighting on the inside. There are times I get heated and I say 'you want some? Come on let's do it.' I am tall but I am a very good inside fighter. I know how to fight on the inside very well," stated Vargas.
The Las Vegas resident made his Top Rank debut when he stepped in the ring on Thursday night. He admitted that part of the allure of signing with them was the possibility of possibly facing Manny Pacquiao in the future.
"I need to prove that I am at the elite level. When I do that I think I could be an opponent for Pacquiao. You never know what call you will get. I got a call to fight Randall Bailey before he decided to fight Devon Alexander. You just never know," Vargas revealed.
When I asked Vargas for a prediction in the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. versus Sergio Martinez fight, Vargas gave the politically correct answer.
"Who ever has the better chin will win that fight. Its going to be a great fight," Vargas said.
With a little prodding he did say that he will be rooting for the son of his idol on Saturday evening.
"I'm going to be rooting for Chavez. His dad was my idol so I hope he takes it," Chavez concluded.
