Jerry Belmontes Tops Ramesis Gil; Odlanier Solis Wins

By Jake Donovan

Jerry Belmontes preserved his unbeaten record with an eight-round unanimous decision win over Ramesis Gil in their Telefutura-televised bout Saturday from the Convention Center in Pharr, Texas.

Scores were 79-72, 78-73 and 77-74 for Belmontes, who was forced to suffer a 10-minute in-ring delay over an issue that required all of the Texas Boxing Commission staff on hand at ringside to man his corner.

Oscar Tovar (5-1-1, 3KO) was impressive in scoring a 2nd round stoppage of Gilbert Cancio in the televised opener. Tovar was patient in the first round before moving in for the kill in the second round. A left hook put Cancio (1-1, 0KO) down on the canvas and the referee waved it off at 1:50 of round two.

In a bout that aired via international feed, Odlanier Solis won a lethargic 12-round decision over Konstantin Airich. Scores were 118-110 and 119-109 (twice) for Solis, who fought for the first time since his failed title bid against Vitali Klitschko last March.

slow and lethargic makes sense, especially if that 267 1/2 listed weight by boxrec.com is accurate pretty heavy for Solis
