Jermell Charlo (28-0, 13KOs), the newly crowned World Boxing Council junior middleweight world championship, would like to defend his title against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs).
Charlo made history last Saturday night in Las Vegas when he knocked out John Jackson to win the vacant crown. The fight was historical because Jermell's twin brother, Jermall Charlo, is the IBF world champion in the same weight division. They became the first twins to hold world titles at the same time in the same weight division.
Canelo previously held the WBC title and lost that strap to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. The belt became vacant when Mayweather retired last September.
Jermell spoke with World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman on Tuesday and said he was very interested in facing Canelo this year or next. He said his brother also wants a crack at Canelo.
"I've always wanted to fight Canelo Alvarez . We've spoken with Golden Boy and we both want to face him. It could be later this year or early next," said Charlo.
"Alvarez is a tough fighter, young, very strong. He's not an easy opponent. He has improved over the years and is very smart. I feel very happy [with winning the world title]. I'm the WBC champion and now everyone is going to come after me and for that reason I have to improve a lot. [Me and my brother] are the best and we know that great things are going to come."
Jermell has a mandatory challenger in Charles Hatley, who this past Saturday night made a spectacle when he entered the ring and accidentally shoved Jermall (mistaking him for Jermell).
