James Kirkland, Brian Vera Score KO Wins in Texas

By Edward Chaykovsky

Dr. Pepper Arena, Frisco, Texas - Junior middleweight contender James Kirkland (28-1, 25 KOs) stopped Dennis Sharpe (17-8-3, 4 KOs) in the first round. Sharpe went down twice. Kirkland is coming off the first loss of his career, which came in April at the hands of little known Nobohiro Ishida. Kirkland was down three times in that fight.

Middleweight Brian Vera (19-5, 12 KOs) stopped Eloy Suarez (11-12-1, 5 KOs) in the eight round. Ironic to see the two boxers, Vera and Kirkland co-headline an event. A few years ago Kirkland stopped Vera in a catch-weight bout. Vera could be heading in the direction of a rematch with Andy Lee.

Sharpe didn't do anything . He stood there and let kirkland use him like a punching bag.

When you get stopped in one stanza by a guy with 6 KO's to his credit, that's the ball game. Once put in tough, all of Anne Woolf's military tactics will not salvage Kirkland's exposed whiskers and fragile, mental nature.…

Kirkland did put on a decent show against a good opponent in Joel Julio a little while ago, I think he is on his way back to that point with Wolfe as his trainer. Just takes more than one fight…

keep feeding bums to kirkland. As soon as he steps up to a top 50 ranked boxer he's dead. Look at those wild retard punches, he's 1 straight right hand away from retirement.

yeah, it's a step in the right direction. get him use to feeling punches again instead just sparring. hopefully wolfe continues to improve his defense and everything...
