J. Mayweather Confident Caballero Plays With Garcia

By Chris Robinson

Word is that WBA featherweight champion Celestino Caballero will be back in Las Vegas sometime tomorrow to start gearing up for his next training camp. This will mark the sixth camp that the lanky Panamanian will be working with head trainer Jeff Mayweather, as ‘Pelenchin’ is coming off of a dominating twelve-round decision on December 31st in Satoshi Hosono’s hometown of Kanagwa, Japan.

The latest buzz has Caballero linked to undefeated contender Mikey Garcia yet Mayweather admits nothing is finalized at this point.

“I’m not 100% sure but obviously, he has a fight set for June,” Jeff stated at the Mayweather Boxing Club recently. “I don’t know exactly who it’s against. I’m assuming it’s against Garcia, because that’s who everybody’s been talking about. But he said he was also called to fight the winner of Salido and Juanma. I don’t know exactly which fight is going to take place, but it’s set for June. More than likely it’s Garcia.”

Over the weekend I caught up with Garcia, who expressed respect for Caballero’s experience on the championship-level yet was also sure to add that he feels he has enough to take his belt away from him.

Giving his take on a possible fight between his man and Garcia, Mayweather’s view was obviously slighted in the opposition direction. And while he started off with some regard to Garcia, he doesn’t see him as a threat to Caballero.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a very good fighter,” Mayweather said of the 24-year old Garcia. “A little untested, he hasn’t really fought anyone. He’s very talented, but if Celestino boxes him, Celestino would have a feast with him. I don’t think that the guy’s that great. He’s a good, young fighter that comes straight forward but he does nothing special at all. If Celestino fights like a tall guy, he’d pick him apart.”

A fight with Salido seems to be out of the equation at least until later in the year but it’s another fight that won’t trouble Mayweather if it were to happen.

“Nope, because if Celestino boxes, Celestino will beat everyone at 126 pounds, easy,” said Mayweather.
